It’s a heavy, wide enough base that it is actually stable. My “spot” in the living room is near a somewhat-cushioned fabric ottoman, which is where I usually put my drinks. Measure the bottom, not the top.
A wide lid means nothing. What matters is the base — the part that has to sit down inside the fins.
A sticky note is exactly 3 inches.
Stand your cup on one. If the base sits inside the square, you're in the range. If it's touching all four edges, it's right at the limit — it will still seat, snug, with a push.

The honest no.
A coffee mug with a handle does not seat, and it is worth saying plainly rather than letting you find out. The base is usually fine. The handle is not — it lands exactly where a fin needs to grip, so the mug sits proud and tilted instead of going in.

Does it attach to the couch?
No. Nothing clips, straps, or sticks to the furniture, and there is nothing to install. It sits on the cushion, and you pick it up and move it wherever you sat down today. That freedom is the mechanism, not a shortcut — being unattached is what lets it follow a cushion that is itself moving.
Will it work on a really soft or deep cushion?
That is what the wide foot is for: 5.2 inches across, spread flat, so the load sits over far more of the cushion than a cup's own base ever touches. A very soft cushion will let it sink and tilt more than a firm one — it moves with the cushion and settles. If yours is the softest couch you have ever met, that is exactly what the ninety days are for.
Can I put a hot drink in it?
Yes — a hot drink in its own cup is ordinary use, as long as the cup's base is in the range. What it should not go near is machine heat: the dishwasher and the microwave. Rinse it or wipe it and it's done.
How do I get a snug tumbler back out?
You pull the holder off the container, not the container out of the holder. Hold the cup, take the base off the bottom of it. It isn't difficult once you have done it once.
What about a koozie, or a cup with a silicone boot?
Both change the measurement that matters, so measure the outside of whatever is actually going to be touching the fins. A boot usually adds enough to push a borderline base over the line. Stand it on a sticky note with the boot on.
